Measurements

To begin, you’ll need the following measurements,

1. Back Piece

  • Height: 8.5 inches
  • Width: Measure across your back and subtract 0.5 inches from the measurement. For example, if your full bust is 33 inches, the front piece will be 17 inches long, and the bottom hem will measure 15 inches.

2. Front Piece

  • Height: 8.5 inches
  • Length: Calculate half of your full bust measurement, then add 0.5 inches. Subtract 1 inch from each side of the bottom hem. For example, if your full bust is 33 inches, the length of the front piece will be 17 inches, and the bottom hem will measure 15 inches.

3. Straps

  • Four rectangles measuring 4 inches in height and 18 inches in width.

To sew this Crop top pattern, you’ll need the following instruction:

1. Pinning the Side Seams

  • Take the front bodice and back bodice pieces and align them at the side seams, making sure not to stretch the fabric. Pin them neatly.
  • Repeat the pinning process on the other side.

2. Sewing the Side Seams

  • Use a sewing machine, stretch stitch (such as a zigzag stitch), or an overlocker to sew the side seams with a 0.5-inch seam allowance.
  • Ensure that the chosen stitch stretches the fabric without seams popping open.
  • Leave the seams unfinished, as knit fabric doesn’t fray. You can trim the edges or use an overlocker for a neat finish.

3. Hemming

  • Identify the widest hem of the top.
  • With the wrong sides facing out, fold the fabric inwards by 0.5 inch along the entire top and bottom hem.
  • Pin the folded fabric in place.
  • Use a sewing machine to sew right against the edge of the folded fabric.
  • Since knit fabric won’t fray, a single folded hem is sufficient.

4. Creating the Straps

  • Pin along the open edge.

  • Put the top on and determine where you want the straps to start. For example, mark those points if you want them to begin three inches from each side.
  • Position one strap (the raw edge end) at the marked point on the front of the top, aligning the raw edge.
  • Pin the strap in place.
  • Repeat this step for the other side and the back of the top.
  • Sew the straps securely to the top using a sewing machine.
