“I would start by watching some YouTube videos to get a sense of how sewing machines work and some basics. We started out with pillowcases, pillows for the couch, and masks. We also did some light quilting – doll blanket, pot holders, etc. Learn to sew straight lines before you get into clothing. Learn to read/use/alter commercial patterns before you start drafting your own.
Sewing machines just depend on how much you want to spend and what sorts of fabrics you’ll work with. I have a Janome 2212, which was about $200, but it’s not high-end or heavy-duty enough for denim or handbag materials. I am not a serious sewist and don’t have the time/patience to find a used machine and has it restored, so it works for me.
