What is a rope basket used for?

A rope basket is a versatile and functional item that can serve various purposes. Here are some common uses for a rope basket:

  • Storage and Organization: Rope baskets are excellent for organizing and storing small items in your home. You can use them to hold sewing supplies, knitting, crochet tools, art and craft supplies, office supplies, bathroom essentials, and more. They provide a stylish and convenient way to keep your items neatly arranged and easily accessible.
  • Decorative Piece: Rope baskets can also be decorative accents in your home. Their natural texture and unique design add visual interest to any room. To improve the overall look of your living space, you can put them on shelves, coffee tables, or worktops.
  • Gift Basket: A rope basket makes a fantastic alternative to traditional gift baskets. You can fill it with goodies, such as gourmet treats, bath and body products, or small presents, and present it as a thoughtful and personalized gift for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions.
  • Laundry or Storage Hamper: Depending on the size of your rope basket, it can be used as a stylish laundry hamper. You can conveniently toss your dirty clothes into the basket; its sturdy construction will hold up well. Additionally, larger rope baskets can serve as storage hampers for toys, blankets, or linens.
  • Plant Holder: Rope baskets can be repurposed as plant holders or planters. Their sturdy structure supports potted plants, allowing you to bring a touch of greenery into your living space while adding a rustic or bohemian vibe.
  • Picnic or Beach Basket: If you have a larger rope basket, it can be used as a picnic or beach basket. Pack your favorite snacks, drinks, and essentials, and enjoy a delightful picnic in the park or a day at the beach. The basket’s durable construction and handles make it easy to carry your supplies.

What rope for bowls?

When making bowls using rope, the choice of rope is important to ensure the desired strength and appearance of the finished product. The most commonly used ropes for making bowls are cotton cords or clothesline ropes.

These ropes are readily available and come in various thicknesses, typically 3/16″ to 1/4″. The choice of rope thickness depends on the size and strength of the bowl you want to create. Thicker ropes provide more stability and strength to the bowl, while thinner ropes can result in a more delicate and flexible bowl.

In the example provided, the creator used a 7/32″ Tuff Rope as it was the closest available option to a 1/4″ thickness. This particular rope worked well for their project, but you can experiment with different thicknesses to achieve the desired results.

Steps to Follow

In this tutorial, I will guide you through creating a stylish basket with a cover using a regular rope. This simple DIY project is perfect for organizing small items or serving as a decorative piece in your home.

Step 1 – Prepare the Rope

Start by applying a small drop of glue to the tip of the rope. This will prevent it from becoming fluffy. Roll the tip of the rope to secure it, and fix it in place with another drop of glue. Hold it until the glue starts to set. This will create a small circle as the base of your basket.

Step 2 – Build the Bottom

Take the rope and begin rolling it around the small circle, securing it with drops of glue along the way. Press each section firmly to ensure a strong bond. Initially, it may be challenging, but it will become easier as you continue. Apply glue and keep rolling the rope around until you achieve the desired size for the Bottom of your basket.

Step 3 – Create the Walls

When working on longer glue runs, pulling the rope slightly as you apply the glue is recommended. This stretching action will prevent the glue from leaking through the layers. After each move, allow the glue to dry fully.

To build the walls of your basket, apply glue on the top edge and pull the rope upward, pressing it firmly. Continue this process, guiding the rope and stretching the glue until you reach the desired wall height.

Step 4 – Finish the Walls

Once you’ve reached the desired height, return to the starting point where you began to climb. Cut off the rope, leaving a small tail, and secure the tip with glue. Ensure the glue dries completely before proceeding.

  2. Apply glue as needed to secure each move.
  3. Gradually increase the cover size by adding more rope rounds and gluing them together.
  4. Fluff the remaining tail and fix it in place with a drop of glue.
  5. Remember to stretch the glue and allow it to dry after each move.
  6. Shape the tip to flatten it and secure it with a final strip of glue to hide it.

Congratulations! You have successfully created a rope basket with a cover. Feel free to use it as is or customize it further based on your preferences. This versatile basket can be used for storing various items, such as hair accessories, crafting supplies, or as a decorative piece in any room of your home.

How much rope do I need to make a bowl?

The amount of rope you need to make a bowl depends on the bowl size you want to create. It isn’t easy to provide an exact measurement as it can vary based on the thickness of the rope and the desired height and width of the bowl. However, as a general guideline, starting with at least 10 yards of rope is recommended.

This length should be sufficient for creating a small-sized bowl. Remember that this is not a strict requirement, and the length of rope you start with will only determine when you’ll need to stop adding more rope to your project. Feel free to adjust the length of the rope based on your preferences and the bowl size you wish to make.
